Around the World in 80 Days

Around the World in 80 Issues?
— 2023 | Alderney Stamp Issue

In his April 7 Mekeel’s & STAMPS column, our New Issues Editor, Dave Kent featured an issue from Alderney, part of the Guernsey island group in the English Channel, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of the book "Around the World in 80 Days" by celebrated author Jules Verne. Since then, it occurred to me that a fascinating collection can be built based on the "Around the World______" theme. In this case, it would be "Around the World in 80 Issues". It fits well with one of the interests of stamp collectors, that being scenes 'from faraway places with strange sounding names,' a theme that attracted many of us to the hobby.

King Charles Stamp

Commonwealth Members Honor Their King
— 2023 | King Charles III Stamp, Gambia

It is customary for member nations of the British Commonwealth to mark various events in the life of their Royal Family, from celebrating their birth through to mourning their passing. It was expected that the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, which we covered previously, was followed by the release of issues commemoration the ascension to the throne of King Charles III.

Among the more popular releases is an ongoing series orchestrated by the Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation of New York, who . . .

Van Gogh, Starry Night Stamp

Collecting The Van Gogh Masterpieces
— 2023 | Starry Night Stamp, Antigua and Barbuda $3.15

With the works of even secondary artists soaring into the millions, it is time to remind art lovers that one of the many wonderful topics that stamp collectors enjoy on a budget revolves around works of art. The approaches are varied: history of art, particular themes, specific artists, museums, and more.

For this issue focusing on Vincent Van Gogh and his masterpieces, I turned to the website of the Inter-Governmental Corporation of New York and selected a few of the many issues that are currently available and affordable there–keeping in mind that the USPS does not include non-U.S. artists or their work—in their stamp programs.

As the peoples of the world mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, it also is an opportunity to recall the grace and dignity with which she lived her life, from a young Princess addressing the British nation during the Blizkrieg in World War II through the 70 years she served as the symbolic leader of Great Britain and the Commonwealth.

Throughout her many decades on the Royal Throne, the Queen has witnessed major political change and engaged some of the most influential World Leaders, including thirteen United States Presidents.

Her passing also offers us an opportunity to celebrate her accomplishments and to assemble a record of her life and times. For stamp collectors as well as all followers

Collecting The History of World War II
— 2022 | Many Stamps for this article found on igpc.com!

As we work our way through Bear Rowell’s chronological history of World War II in Mekeel’s & Stamps, I enjoy searching for images to supplement the text. For me, it is a form of collection building.

With that, it occurred to me that collectors who are interested in history might want to build a History of World War II Collection. Queen Elizabeth II Stamp, Marshall Islands

Of Monarchs and Presidents
— 2021 | Queen Elizabeth II and U.S. Presidents

There was a time when postage stamps depicted only ruling monarchs and an occasional coat of arms from the issuing country–or Presidents in the case of the USA. Those days are gone, but topical collectors still can enjoy their share of Royals on Stamps. Because of the breadth of the British Commonwealth, the British Royal family is a particularly popular subject for issuing nations and collectors.

Recently we had a different take on the subject. Instead of a Commonwealth nation, the Marshall Islands, a former . . .

Born in December 1770, the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven remains one of the most admired composers in the history of Western and classical music. Under the tutelage of his father and other great musicians, the young Beethoven was instantly identified as a child prodigy with potential for greatness.

He composed impressive piano sonatas, concertos, and more, which quickly awarded him a large and growing audience. Covid-19 A Tribute to those on the Front Line, Postage Stamps - The Gambia, 2020

New Covid Mini-Omnibus From IGPC
— 2020 | A Tribute to those on the Front Line

The nations of the world continue to issue stamps to honor the heroes who are fighting Covid-19 and to remember those who have died, which is now approaching the 1,000,000 mark.

Meanwhile, the USPS, now past the 200,000 deaths mark, still has not indicated that they are giving any thought to such an issue. Although there has been some speculation that the Trump administration does not want to issue a reminder of the pandemic and the death toll, I would like to think that it is another demonstration of a distorted selection process.

Another possibility is that a stamp will be issued after a successful vaccine is developed. That assumes, as expected, it will be developed by . . . .

While space flight, particularly manned space flight, has taken some of the attention away, the development of the airplane and the contributions it has made are subjects that remain widely followed in movies, on television and nowadays in the social media. Airplanes also remain popular with stamp collectors and, as a result, with postal administrations.
